How the numbers work
Work hours = the new price ÷ hourly pay. The saving scenario puts that same price aside today, with no extra deposits: price × (1 + yearly interest ÷ 100)years. Read about compound interest. The wage references were checked on September 26, 2026; you can enter your own pay.
For buying or repairing, we add the price and any monthly cost of owning it. For renting, we add the monthly rate, or the price per rental multiplied by how often you would rent it. “Per month” is the total divided by the time you chose. Each option needs to meet the same need for that whole time. Condition, convenience and resale value are not priced in.
